So sorry for the lengthy delay in getting this up!  Things being busy meant not having much time to write all of this up and get another project started. Slow as it goes, I'm still working on new pencil drawings of current and soon to be introduced OC's!  I wonder whom you'd want to see next?

For now, let's have Jura's best friend from school and close boxing gym mate Sonohara Kagami introduce herself!  Introduced as a background character during a long-running RP, she's become a central part of the cast, along with several others who know Yukinoshita Jura. ^^

-------------------

Name: Kongou Takao

Age: 22

Family: Sonohara Ohtani (Father, Investment Banker), Sonohara Megumi (Middle School teacher), Friends - Jura, Arisu, Ruri

Height: 5'6.475'

Weight: 152-lbs

Stance: Orthodox

Best punches: Left jab, multiple jabs at range, feint-precise angle opposite hand strikes, jab-cross combinations

Sunday Punch: Hard left uppercut, right body hook, left overhand hook to the head ("Pythagoras' Theorem')

Style: Boxer

Likes: Academics, science, science-fiction, Star Trek (EXCLUDING ST V) classic literature (Japanese and Western - Cicero, Plato, Homer, Virgil), studying all subjects (including boxing research), disciplined exercise......... and Eggo Waffles.  Leggo them or she'll give you an education!

Dislikes: The arrogant gym girls, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, poor efforts, bugs (she'll grab the nearest person and use them as a swatter), computer virii (which she eliminates quickly!), one-dimensional professors, "blind" boxing judges.

-------------------

Most young girls growing up in Japan would tell you that they were raised with things like Sanrio, Pokémon, sharing dolls with friends and having sleepovers where the night’s spent jabbing about boys, fashion, idols and their favourite TV shows.

Then there’s the bespectacled Sonohara Kagami.  Born to investment banker Sonohara Ohtani and middle school teacher mother, Megumi, she would prove to be unique from the moment she came into the world as an 8½-pound bundle of academic joy.

With a busy, but caring lifestyle, Ohtani would often have baby Kagami with him in his study while he pored over the day’s financial data for his investment clients.  Playfully, he’d bring the little infant onto his lap and show her all those important figures and numbers, saying that this is how he helps big people live a comfortable life.

“Look at all those numbers growing, Kagami-chan.  Maybe one day, you’ll be poring over things like this to make a difference in other people’s lives just like daddy is!”

Little did he know that those little, young eyes would actually be more fascinated with those graphs, charts and figures than he could ever imagine, not to mention those really neat looking machines and stories about science and space in that little publication called Popular Mechanics that mother used for her science classes.  It didn’t matter if she couldn’t understand the words, yet.  Those little eyes just wanted to see more of those complex, weird looking things she’d later come to know as investment ledgers and papers on the discoveries made by the Hubble Space telescope.

Other kids in pre-school ask their parents “What’s that?  Is that a cat?  Can you read me a bedtime story?” Kagami?  She once asked her mother, “Mom, who’s Cicero? I wanna know what he writes about!”

When that playful fascination in complex literature, science articles and financial statistics turned into a grand quest to know about it all, which included the discovery of all the dictionaries in the home strewn around Kagami’s bedroom, Ohtani and Megumi immediately knew they had a rather extraordinary daughter.  And at that time, she was only 6-years old! Kagami had such a huge thirst for knowledge, it was hard to get her to go out during recess and play with the other children at school, though she did go out after some coaxing by her teachers.  She was always a bit awkward, but got along with her classmates, given that she was reading and doing math at a level 5 grades above everyone else.  One thing was for sure: if someone had trouble with a word or math problem, they’d go to Kagami.  In turn, Kagami would seek help from the more physically gifted classmates when looking for tips on how to jump higher in gym class.

-------------------

As Middle School approached, not as many of her classmates socialized with her, often seeing her more as a teacher’s pet, know-it-all and brown-noser that should be in an advanced private academy rather than with everyone else in the normal school system. She’d still get classmates asking her about difficult assignments, but the level of socializing dropped significantly as the 1st semester drew on. She’d even had some nicknames attached to her that she’d come to accept; “Megane,” “Kyouju,” “Purple Schnauzer,”

Kagami knew that her genius-level intellect had alienated her from others, but she didn’t want to leapfrog over everyone and receive special treatment.  She just wanted to lead a normal life with all the others and find success in her own way, rather than be treated like a celebrity student.  Once high school came around, Kagami knew that she’d be showered with scholarships and would have no trouble getting into any university she wanted to, but more than anything, she just wanted to find success in her own way.

Now, given that Kagami’s a certified genius girl and academic prodigy, how does she end up becoming an ardent student of the sweet science and integral member of a famous boxing gym, later to become a professional fighter??

The answer: meeting Yukinoshita Jura.

Jura and Kagami hit it off after an incident at the beginning of the 2nd semester during the first year of Middle School.  Jura, the determined but awkwardly clumsy girl she was back then had been the subject of taunts and bullying, even though she was pretty and her scores were decent.

After standing up for her during one study session, the two became close friends, with Kagami being the “protector” of the two along with the shoulder to lean on when difficult situations arose, both academically and with other students.  Often, they’d pair up on assignments with Kagami handling more of the technical writing and research, and Jura on more creative aspects since she was fairly gifted with graphic applications.  Having lost several friends from previous years, gaining Jura’s friendship felt like gaining several at once.  It seemed like they were destined to meet and help each other in their own ways.

When Jura was determined to prove to her mother that she wasn’t the awkward, weak girl she thought of her as by going to join a boxing gym, Kagami felt compelled to tag along so she could keep an eye on her and be sure that she would be okay.  In the process, her own life was transformed.  Not only was she a genius bookworm, but soon she’d also add extremely capable boxer to that as well.

-------------------

Having researched the styles of boxing and stories about the many great figures in the sport, she was mentally prepared for the hard training that would come from daily life inside a boxing gym.  Putting theory to practice was always going to be the harder part, but with her grasp of statistics and probability and keen sense of observation, she avoided the “customary” beat down from one of the older girls at the Boxing Bunny Gym she and Jura attended.  She even turned the tables on Ayatsuji Sakura, the gym’s #1A at the time by lasting the full 3 rounds without being knocked down…. before any formal training had begun.

From then on, Kagami would become an ardent student of the sweet science, soaking in all the advice and guidance from veteran trainer Daimori Teruko and watching hours of footage from boxing matches featuring many of the gym girls, trainers and great fighters alike, including the idol figures of the whole gym, Tamao Silver and Isabelle Beaumont.

Over the course of a few months, Kagami had developed a boxer’s style, preferring to let her jab do most of the work as she studied her opposition for openings where she could rack up points and wear her down over the long haul of a full match.  With extensive training, she’d become very fit and packed on plenty of muscle mass, though her punching power continued to be just a bit above average.  She preferred the “science” part of boxing, the strategy that lead to points victories, though she developed the ability to score a decisive knockout against like-sized opponents from time to time.

She certainly needed all that knowledge, given the rough and tumble nature of some of the more notorious gym girls who liked nothing more than tormenting the fragile Jura, doing their best to get under the skin of herself as well through after-match taunts that she lost by decision, or constant nicknames they attached to her such as “Trek-Nerd,” "Wile E. Kagami," or just plain “Algebra,” None of them ever affected her. In fact, taunting gym members made her much more determined to ‘put them in detention’ the hard way.

-------------------

Over the next few years, Kagami would meet and become close friends with another hard working, if mismatched duo in the very rich “ojou-san,” Daidouji Arisu, and her best friend Ruri whom would be best described as a loud, muscular Amazon among all the girls attending the gym. These three would face each other numerous times in weekly sparring events and amateur matches in front of their trainers and prospective boxing promoters, and the rivalry between Kagami and Arisu was the most competitive, given Kagami’s study of how to fight southpaws effectively, and Arisu’s crafty aggressiveness in the ring.  Back and forth they went, with some (articulate in Kagami’s case) trash talk between the two in the ring, but chummier outside of it.

Kagami, along with Ruri and Arisu would become known as “The Bunnies,” of the gym, given their fandom of the Energizer Bunny, and how they’d scoot around to defend Jura from the latest bully girl attacks.  They’d be supportive, and not too doting, though Kagami and Arisu would indirectly give special attention if Jura really needed some emotional encouragement to continue her difficult road in boxing.  They all vowed that if they turned pro before Jura, they’d wait till she achieved that feat before taking on their first pro matches.

They lived up to their vow.  It took 6 extra months, but all four of them made their professional debuts at the same event, vowing to support each other as they fight.  Kagami and Jura continue to do so as close, best friends, even taking greater roles in the operations of the gym.  The finances have never been better with Kagami handling the books for the owner.  It looks like daddy’s words stayed with her for all that time.

A crafty, strategic thinker’s boxer, Sonohara Kagami is a formidable foe to oppose in the ring.  She’s not the hardest puncher, but her skill, strategy and mathematically placed combinations can make life miserable to those who challenge her.  And if she faces defeat, she’s philosophical about it.  You learn by analyzing your defeat, and return the education to the other the next time.

Now, what is it that keeps you in boxing, Kagami-chan?

Kagami: Ah.  Well, as long as I bring success to the gym and myself, boxing will make going to To-Dai and MIT a lot easier, and the scholarships will certainly be justified.

And how about those gruff bully girls that you, Jura and the other Bunnies have had to put up with?

Kagami: Ahhh, Here they come. Our bread and butter: Thrill-seeking bigmouth boxer girls with a poor grasp of statistics and probability. ^^ *Ahem* apologies to the programmers of that very intuitive, entertaining game. J

Class dismissed!
